A WREXHAM gym will flex its entertainment muscle later this month.

With owner Jason Jones at the helm, Spartan Training Centre in Ruabon, is hosting Wrexham's Strongest Man.

Jason, from Johnstown, is no stranger to being at the top of his game when it comes to all things physical.

The 53-year-old, a former competitor himself, is the current Guinness World Record holder of 'most weight lifted by Atlas stone lifts in one minute (male)'.

The search for Wrexham's Strongest Man takes place on Saturday, September 28, from 10am-3pm.

As well as local hopefuls, there will be some big names from the strongman world, including John Thompson and Dean Evans.

Events on the day will include sandbag carry and sled drag, Apollon's axle and a 12-tonne truck pull, as well as a deadlift world record attempt.

Jason, who makes the Atlas stones, said: "There's five events on the day, with one lad hoping to pull a 460kg deadlift, which is world class, and Dean Evans is hoping to break a deadlift record.

"I have a big history with the sport, and for me the opening the gym was the next step. It came from me coaching people."

For those looking to go along on the day and witness the spectacle, there is a spectator's fee of £3.

The gym currently has more than 50 per cent of its membership made up of women, is planning a Spartan's Strongest Woman event for April 2025.

It was also visited earlier this year by actors Will Mellor and Ralf Little, filming for a new reality show out later this year.
