FORMER Wrexham AFC star Andy Morrell is taking on a gruelling cycle challenge to raise money for charity.

The ex-Reds striker and boss is cycling from Lands End to John O'Groats in aid of the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.

His godson Jack was diagnosed with Prader-Willi Syndrome at a young age. Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes a wide range of physical symptoms, learning difficulties and behavioural challenges.

As he was turning 50 in September, Andy decided to challenge himself by taking on the 980 mile challenge.

He set off from Lands End on Saturday (September 7) and is set to complete the challenge on September 16 in the highlands of Scotland.

Andy is taking on the 980-mile cycle as part of the Babble Ride Across Britain, an organisation that sort the challenge. There are around 800 people completing the challenge this year.

The Leader spoke to Andy after his fourth day on the bike, just after he'd arrived in Haydock.

He said: "Just finished day four, we're about 420 miles in.

"This was meant to be the easy stage with not much climbing, but I've been straight into wind all day it's been tough, but we've got it done and it's onto the next one.

"I've got five days left and a lot of hills to come, we're heading to Carlisle tomorrow then after that it's into Scotland.

"It's tough but great, the team really look after you and make sure you're sorted for drinks or anything like that but you've just got to get on with it.

"There's about 800 of us doing it, it's massive. It's been running for a few years and it's so well organised.

"Jack was diagnosed at an early age, he's a great kid and I love him to bits.

"Obviously the effects of the condition can have a ripple effect on friends and family and those close to him, so it's just about trying to help them and raise awareness.

"I saw him in Ludlow on Monday and that was a great pick me up after a tough day, it really helped.

"As long as I can do my bit, I will and that's what it's all about."
