THIS MONTH the city of Wrexham will remember those who sadly lost their lives in the Gresford Colliery Disaster.
On September 21, people across the city centre will mark the 90th anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded.
Organised by Sharon Powell, George Powell and William Blease, a candle lighting ceremony will commence at 10pm on Saturday, September 21. Guests can arrive from 6pm.
Originally, the event was set to entail the lighting of the lamp candles, but due to high interest of support, 266 candles will now be lit and displayed around the Mines Rescue Centre. One for each life lost during the Gresford Colliery Disaster.
A vigil will be held until 2.08am on Sunday, September 22nd when the candles will be extinguished. This will be the same time and date when fire engulfed the Dennis section of the colliery after a massive explosion ripped through the mine 90-years-ago.
Representatives of family and friends have been invited to light and expunge the candles.

William says his responsibility was to design and create the candles with help from Julian Nester from Wrexham University.
He said: "A verbal description of the candle making process would not justify the work that went into creating the candles.
"We have received so much love and support from the whole Wrexham community non more so than the Declan swans who have written a beautifully moving song for the 90th anniversary."
