TODAY is Friday 13th, and for many it's associated with bad luck.
All too familiar with that superstition are domestic black cats.
Black cats have long been the subject of myth and legend, are often associated with witches and good or bad luck in folklore.
Whether it's as a result of this or desire for so called 'prettier cats', black cats are usually harder to rehome from animal rescue centres.

Here we put a positive spotlight on the black cats and kittens awaiting adoption at NCAR.
As well as cats, North Clwyd Animal Rescue (NCAR) have dogs, horses and some smaller animals, all hoping to find their forever home.
Staff and volunteers at the Trelogan-based charity, in Flintshire, know the animals as individuals, and therefore know what kind of home they are more likely to thrive in.
They also make sure potential new owners are aware of the ongoing costs of a pet, including food and vet bills, which can often be for unexpected treatment.
If you aren't spooked, here we meet just some of the black cats at NCAR looking for a new home...
• For more details, please visit ncar.org.ukor if you would like to support the charity without adopting, you can visit their cafe, open from 10.30am to 3.30pm. They also accept donations at the centre between 10am and 4pm.
• 18-month-old Poppy is a lovely girl who came into care after being a stray for a while. She is friendly and likes attention but is quite a quiet girl. She is going to be best suited to a calm, quiet home but we are sure she will be nice company for someone. Poppy is looking for a home with a safe outdoor area for her to explore once she has settled in.
• Mimi (18 months) and Patty (about six months) are a mother and daughter duo who came into care due to their owner moving house and not being able to take them along. Mimi is a lovely, friendly girl who likes having a fuss, whereas Patty is quite nervous at the moment, although she is starting to come out of her shell now she will need continued socialisation to keep increasing her confidence. They have lived with a small dog before so do have potential to live with a small cat-friendly dog in their next home as long as slow sensible introductions can be done. Patty has never been outdoors before and Mimi hasn't been outside since she got pregnant. They can both adjust to venturing outside in their new home but would need to live in a quiet area.
• Ghost is a lovely boy, aged eights years and nine months, who came into our care as a stray and then we found out his owner didn't want him back. He is very friendly and likes attention, he is looking for a home with sensible children 10+ and is looking for a home as the only pet in the home. Ghost gives good cuddles and head bumps. He is quite a laidback lad who settled into the cattery quickly and is no trouble to care for. He likes his meal times and coming out for wander around. He is looking for a home with a good outdoor area for him to explore once he has settled in.
• 18-month-old Cadbury is a beautiful long haired black cat that came to us after being found as a stray and also being pregnant. Her kittens are looking for a home separately. She is a really friendly lass who loves attention and lap time. Once fully settled in to her new home she would like a garden to explore in a safe area away from fast or busy roads. She could go to a home with children over five years of age. She would prefer to be the only pet in the home.
• 14-week-old Khan is a little cutie who was born here and has grown up here at the rescue and is now ready to find a new home. He can be timid of new people currently but is friendly when he is familiar with you, however this will improve once he goes to a new home and has more one on one time. He is looking for a quiet home with sensible children aged 10+ as he will likely be easily overwhelmed by young children. Khan is looking for a home with cat-savvy people who will be patient with him whilst he settles and adjusts to living in a home. When he is confident around you, he is a typical playful and comical kitten who will make a great companion. Khan does have a brother called Yao, it would be lovely if they found a new home together but this isn't essential.
• 14-week-old Yao is a little cutie who was born here and has grown up here at the rescue and is now ready to find a new home. She can be timid of new people currently but is friendly when she is familiar with you, however this will improve once she goes to a new home and has more one on one time. She is looking for a quiet home with sensible children aged 10+ as she will likely be easily overwhelmed by young children. Yao is looking for a home with cat-savvy people who will be patient with her whilst she settles and adjusts to living in a home. When she is confident around you, she is a typical playful and comical kitten who will make a great companion.
• We have three 12-week-old kittens that were born and then spent their first eight weeks growing up in a barn. They had no handling but saw people around attending the horses. They are two are female and one a male. We are looking for a stable or farm environment for them where they can stay together. They are all neutered, flea and worm treatment given. Their next home would need to have a secure outbuilding where they spend the next month inside with litter trays so that they acclimatise to the new environment. Food and shelter will need to be provided after this period. They are not suitable to go into a home as they prefer not to be stroked but will come close to you for food. They should be good for rodent control in the future! We are looking for a home where the owners live on site and the small holding needs to be away from any fast or busy roads. We do not charge an adoption fee for these kittens but a donation is always welcome.
