Local campaigners have welcomed the news that Greenfield Valley Trust is trying to bring some fishing back to the Valley.

Plans have been published to create fishing pegs at Meadow Mill Pool and a public meeting has been arranged for Monday, September 16.

Brenda Harvey, Chair of the Trust, said: ‘There was a local campaign about fishing opportunities for young people in the Valley and so we tried to see how this could be fired into our 10-year plan of improvements.

"Our solution is to focus fishing on the Meadow Mill Pool which is close to the Valley’s Bryn Celyn car park.

"We are aiming to create leisure fishing opportunities where people, and young people in particular, can enjoy a few quiet hours fishing.

"We are not making a fishing lake for experienced adult anglers, because these already exist elsewhere and our pools are not appropriate for this."

The scheme has been drawn up by environmental consultants TEP and is based on surveys of the site, the pool and the water. A survey has also been undertaken of the fish in the Valley and these can be used to stock the Meadow Mill pool.

Graeme Atherton of TEP consultants said: "We have devised a scheme to create four fishing pegs with disabled access from the car park as a first phase, with hopefully more pegs and a footpath all around the pool to follow in the future.

"The proximity of the Bryn Celyn car park and its access is really helpful, both for providing access to carry out the works and for making sure that the fishing pegs are accessible to everyone."

The funding for the drawing up of the proposals, and for some of the works to create the fishing pegs and path, has come from the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund following a successful bid by Greenfield Valley Trust and Flintshire County Council.

The proposed Meadow Mill Fishing Pool scheme will be described at a public meeting to be held in the Victorian Schoolroom near the Visitor Centre in the Valley at 6.30pm on Monday 16th September.

The plans will also be available on the Valley’s website from that date.
