Mold Rugby Club is to mark its 50th anniversary this year with a series of celebrations and activities.

Events will be planned throughout the season, starting with the weekend of the club’s first home game on Saturday, September 14 when Mold host Cobra RFC. The match will also mark the official opening of the new pitch by Robin McBride, former Scarlets, Wales, and British Lions player.

The anniversary celebrations kick off the previous evening on Friday, September 13 with a buffet and entertainment.

The club’s roots date back to its original formation in 1934, but like many organisations, the outbreak of World War Two halted progress, and the club was re-established in 1974.

The team initially played at Mold Alun School pitch, and the club's rebirth was driven by a dedicated group of local teachers. Among the founding members are; Llew Evans (Head of PE, Elfed High School), Malcolm  Shorney (Former science teacher, Elfed  High School) , Kern Roberts (Business studies teacher), John Ambrose (Flint High School), Ron Stevens (Nuclear scientist working at Capenhurst), and Alwyn Evans (Former Head of English, Elfed High School).

The club’s first official meeting took place at the Drovers Arms in Mold and it was chaired by Bob Taylor, then head of Ysgol Bryn Coch,  Mold. From these humble beginnings, Mold Rugby Club has grown into one of the largest and most successful clubs in North Wales, boasting 16 teams and over 1,000 members.

Mold Rugby Club has made significant contributions to rugby in Wales, developing players who have gone on to play at the top level, while maintaining its status as a community-focused, grassroots club.

Today, the club offers opportunities for players from the Under-6s through to the First Team and beyond, serving as a cornerstone of the community.

The weekend’s celebrations will include the unveiling of the club’s new pitch, a project that represents the club’s commitment to investing in the future and improving facilities for generations to come. The involvement of Robin McBride, a legendary figure in Welsh rugby, further underlines the importance of this milestone in the club's history.
