A WREXHAM teenager has been handed a community order after she was caught on camera stealing garden furniture from a shop.

Margret Maguire, of Homestead Lane, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old was convicted at a previous hearing of one offence of theft from a shop.

Prosecutor Rachel Drew told the court the defendant took an outdoor table and chair set worth £50 from Home Bargains in Wrexham on March 26 this year.

Officers viewed CCTV at the store and identified Maguire, and when interviewed she denied having anything to do with the offence.

The matter was set down for trial, but the defendant changed her plea to guilty on the day of the hearing.

Ms Drew said Maguire has "a history of dishonesty offences."

Bethan Jones, defending, told the court the Probation Service had recommended various measures for her client's rehabilitation.

She said: "The [pre-sentence] report touches on her difficulties.

"I'm aware they are far more deep-rooted than the report suggests."

She said her client had experienced "a difficult last few years," adding: "She's also going through family difficulties.

"I've been candid with her - she needs to make this work, and she has said she will do everything she can to make it work.

"The idea of her doing unpaid work would be difficult and she'll struggle massively in a group environment.

"If it's one-on-one [probation work], she'll be absolutely fine.

"She's a lady with quite serious issues."

The Magistrates handed down a 12 month community order with 35 rehabilitation activity days and a £108 fine.

Maguire must also pay £50 compensation to Home Bargains, £85 costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
