Property services business Liberty is teaming up with Wrexham County Borough Council (WCBC) to participate in Gas Safety Week.

They aim to increase awareness amongst residents about the importance of gas safety during the week, which takes place from September 9 to 15, 2024.

As part of this effort, a pop-up event is scheduled to be held at the Caia Estate Housing Office on Thursday, September 12, from 10am to 2pm.

Attendees will be taught simple steps to maintain the safety of their gas appliances.

Gas Safety Week is an annual initiative that seeks to inform the public about the proper usage of gas, ways to avoid gas-related accidents, and how to identify the warning signs of an unsafe gas appliance.

This year, Liberty is collaborating with over 60 clients across England and Wales to distribute valuable tips on gas safety.

Gas leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can result from poorly maintained boilers, ovens, gas fires, and other gas appliances.

By looking after these appliances and identifying the early warning signs of unsafe equipment, people can protect both their homes and loved ones.

Liberty and WCBC advise residents to be mindful of any warning signs that may indicate improper functioning of their gas appliances.

Potential signs can include unusually lazy yellow or orange flames, a pilot light that keeps going out, or too much condensation in the room.

Residents are advised against attempting to fix these problems themselves.

Instead, they should contact a Gas Safe registered engineer, who can be reached either through GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by calling 0800 408 5500.

Common symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, and loss of consciousness.

Residents are urged to install an audible carbon monoxide alarm and to ensure the same for their friends and relatives.

Gas appliances ought to be safety-checked annually and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Karen Sloan, managing director for heating and compliance at Liberty, said: "We take pride in our work to ensure people’s gas appliances are operating safely and efficiently in around a quarter of a million homes across the country.

"We are here to help share simple tips with everyone in Wrexham so they can spot faulty gas appliances or signs of carbon monoxide poisoning and take action to stay safe."

Councillor David A Bithell, lead Member for housing and climate change, said, "We are pleased to be working in collaboration with Liberty to provide support and awareness for local people.

"Liberty are providing useful tips which are beneficial for our Contract Holders to know to ensure they are staying safe in their homes."

Jonathan Samuel, chief executive officer for Gas Safe Register, said: "This is the fourteenth Gas Safety Week and the theme for 2024 is Checking — Every Check Counts.

"The week will encourage checking, in many guises, and shine a light on the importance of gas safety in keeping ourselves and our community safe."
