A CULINRARY competition featuring local schools will be a new feature in this year's Mold Food and Drink Festival.

The festival organisers wants to showcase the next generation of chefs, and invited high schools across Flintshire to take part in its new culinary competition.

The theme was 'Welsh Within', and schools were asked to create a recipe that included at least one Welsh ingredient, and that it should cost no more than £10 and feed two people as a main course.

It was opened up to all high schools in Flintshire and teams could be made up of up to three students and one supervising teacher per team.

From the recipe entries, three teams were chosen for the final - which takes place on the Sunday morning (September 15) at the Mold Food and Drink Festival Cookery Theatre, before the festival opens to the public.

The winning school will take away £1,000 to purchase cookery equipment; the two runner up schools will get £500.

A spokesperson for the food festival said: "We appreciate the tight budgets schools and families are under, and we have made provisions to reimburse the teachers for their time. The schools will also receive funding towards the cost of the food, and we have made available 50 adult festival tickets to help friends and family members of the participating schools come and watch their teams compete.

"In addition to the financial benefits, the teams will also receive rather splendid trophies, which we feel will look fabulous in their trophy cabinets."
