A ONE-WAY road closure close to Wrexham Maelor Hospital is already causing "mayhem", staff and patients have said.

Croesnewydd Road is closed one-way from the roundabout at Rhyd Broughton Lane to Ty Powys Nurses Home.

The closure came into affect on Monday (September 2) and is in place until November to facilitate major gas works by Wales & West Utilities.

Croesnewydd Road is the main route to Wrexham Maelor Hospital, and already members of staff and patients have taken to Facebook to bemoan the traffic disruption being caused.

One staff member said: "(It) Took me an hour and 10 to get from by the Ramada to the hospital, and a further 40 minutes to get back round from there at rush hour. We also had to try and move for an ambulance on blues to get through.

"I know the work needs doing but it's less than ideal."

Another added: "Coming from the hospital was ok, the queue going up towards the hospital/town was awful."

Other people described it as "mayhem".

"Took me 50 minutes to get home, usually a 10 minute drive," one person said. Some said they were late for appointments as a result.

The traffic issues were compounded by four-way temporary lights in operation on Ruthin Road, near Morrisons.

County councillor for the area, Phil Wynn, said he is meeting with the contractor on Tuesday afternoon to find out if steps can be taken to minimise disruption.

Wales & West Utilities' Adam Smith is managing this gas pipe upgrade work and previously told the Leader: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future."

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been approached for comment on the matter.
