An alternative Eisteddfod is set to take place in Colwyn Bay.

The Malu Awyr Alternative Eisteddfod will be held at the Ink Gallery and Bar on Thursday, September 5.

Organised by the Pwyllgor Colwyn committee, the event is a celebration of alternative talents.

The group was established earlier this year with the help of Menter Iaith Conwy to promote the Welsh language in the area.

Since April, they have been holding monthly informal evenings at Ink Gallery and Bar for Welsh speakers of all levels to socialise and enjoy various activities.

Aled Roberts, a member of Pwyllgor Colwyn, said: "There was a misconception that starting a Welsh group in The Bay would be a very hard sell, but the truth is that there are more here who can speak the language than I expected - although in the minority in terms of percentage - and we have seen enthusiasm locally when we organise events.

"A lot of planning and head-scratching has gone into arranging this Alternative Eisteddfod.

"It's hard to know what to expect but I'm confident it will be a really fun night and that we'll see lots of local talent - Eisteddfodol or otherwise!"

The event is believed to be the first Alternative Eisteddfod within the present county of Conwy since the Arwest Glan Geirionydd 150 years ago, which was a response to the Anglicised and Royalist National Eisteddfods.

However, the Malu Awyr Alternative Eisteddfod is not a protest; it's a relaxed evening giving people of all language levels a chance to participate in traditional Eisteddfod competitions and showcase any other talent.

People interested in singing, knitting, reciting poetry, performing magic tricks, or any other safe indoor performance are encouraged to join.

Those wishing to participate can email eryl@miconwy.cymru or send a message to the Pwyllgor Colwyn Facebook page.

Alternatively, they can simply turn up on the night.

The inaugural Malu Awyr Alternative Eisteddfod promises to be an entertaining evening of diverse performances and community spirit.
