THE MULTI-million pound refurbishment of Wrexham's Indoor Butchers Market remains on course for completion later this year.
The Grade II-listed General and Butchers markets are being refurbished as part of the Wrexham Townscape Heritage Scheme, funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund (with thanks to the National Lottery Players), Welsh Government – Transforming Towns Fund, and Wrexham Council's capital programme.
SWG Construction is leading the project on behalf of Wrexham Council as part of the city centre's regeneration project which also involves the pedestrianisation of High Street.
The Butchers Market renovation will see a new layout of the central stalls in the market hall, aimed at increasing footfall and customer flow around the market.
An opening is likely for October this year, hints Lead member for Economy, Business and Tourism on Wrexham Council, Nigel Williams.
The Markets will offer flexible units for traders, and the central stall layout is being redesigned to facilitate easier circulation.
Various sized stalls will fill the space, perfect for existing traders and those starting out with their business.
Potential traders and local businesses can get in touch with the council for information on how they can get involved in the near future. An application form will be required due to the high-interest received already.
Cllr Williams said: "The exciting project to refurbish the much loved Victorian Butchers and general market buildings in the city centre is entering its final stages.
"Both buildings are undergoing a once in a generation back to brick refurbishment all thanks to grant funding.
"The refurbishment is seeing a mix of old features being brought back to life, bespoke hand crafted Victorian style shop frontages reinstated and more modern market trader units fitted to compliment existing works.

"We are looking to complete works early October with a definitive date to be announced nearer the time.
"We now have a “call to traders” marketing campaign starting with the opportunity for individuals who would like more information about opening a market stall in the markets to contact us on the dedicated email address to be part of this exciting journey."
Upon completion, both markets will also enjoy upgraded services, a WiFi network, CCTV, and improved disabled access, all of which will enhance the overall market experience for the community.
Earlier this summer, the cafe was completed and reopened to customers again. Electrical services have progressed considerably and stalls have been installed.
An exact reopening date will be confirmed by Wrexham Council in due course.
