AN AWARENESS ride is set to take place in Wrexham as the horse-riders across the UK petition with a 'Pass Wide and Slow' big ride out weekend.

On September 14 and 15, horse riders will gather across the UK to raise vital awareness of vulnerable road users and encourage motorists to comply with the law when it comes to overtaking animals.

The event aims to raise awareness of vulnerable road users and make people aware of the rule of passing horses at a distance of two-metres travelling at 10-miles-an-hour.

Across the UK, Horse and Rider UK revealed that at least one horse was killed on the roads per week in 2023. A horrifying statistic for riders wanting to travel safely and without disturbance.

Approximately 210 events have been organised in the UK alone, with Anne Williams-King taking charge of the ride in Penycae, Rhos and Bronwylfa. It will commence at 11am on September 15.

Anne said: "While some people are really considerate, others are very unsympathetic and quite rude about us riding on the roads, it's lack of understanding and impatience mainly.

"Our off road riding had been taken away from us slowly over the years due to significant housing demands and developments of new housing estates in the area. Farmers now have limited land to grow crops or hone cattle which ultimately feeds the country.

"We want to be on the roads as little as possible but we don't have a choice.

"We're simply asking all road users have have respect for each other. We're not demanding that cars stick to motorways and a roads, cyclists to ride in a gym, dog walkers to keep walk their dogs around their own gardens etc. We're just trying to raise awareness on how we can all use the roads safely TOGETHER."

All riders across Wrexham and the north Wales region are being encouraged to participate. Contact Anne Williams-King on Facebook for further details.
