Flintshire mum unable to register newborn at GP

People living on Ewart Street and North Street in Saltney Ferry say they are unable to register with a doctor's practice.

Jordan Wynne, who lives on Ewart Street, has faced issues with getting her newborn baby, Stormi, registered anywhere. Alarmingly, Stormi, just weeks old, has been in hospital due to an eye infection.

Jordan, aged 31, said: "I have tried everywhere and nowhere in Flintshire will accept her. I've been registered with the Saltney Surgery my whole life, as has my eldest daughter, but they said Stormi lives outside the catchment area. I've no idea when this changed but as a mum I feel helpless that I cannot find my daughter a GP. This part of Saltney Ferry is a bit out of the way, we feel we're often forgotten about. It's like we're in the no man's land catchment area.

"Being in and out of hospital with Stormi since the day she was born is stressful and worrying enough, nevermind worrying about battling to find her a GP. I’m supposed to be enjoying my little baby bubble with my family and I’ve felt nothing but stress. How can the health board miss a whole street from a catchment area of a doctor's surgery? It’s absolute madness and I’ve never heard anything like it in my life."

Jordan, who said she also tried registering Stormi at GPs across Deeside, added: "For nowhere not to accept her even after explaining I’ve been in and out of hospital with her poorly is disgusting.

"I really hope this can be sorted with the help from the councillors and the MP (Mark Tami) who have been an amazing support to me and my family. I do not want anybody to experience the stress and worry I have had to deal with."

Local cllr, Jason Shallcross, thankfully helped Stormi get temporarily registered with a GP over the border in Chester until the matter is resolved.

Another Ewart Street resident facing similar issues is Anneka Clark. She said her 17-year-old niece, who was taken off registration at The Elms in Chester last year, can't find a GP which will accept her.

"It's really worrying for people living around here," Anneka said. "The A+E departments at hospitals are really struggling, and we can't even find a GP which will accept us. This is just going to add to the strain placed on hospitals as we'll have no other choice than go to A+E.

"A family of four have recently moved in next door to us and I worry for them getting registered at a doctors."

Local councillors Jason Shallcross and Richard Lloyd issued a joint statement on the matter. They said: "We are really pleased we were able to help Jordan temporarily register her baby at a local doctor's surgery just outside Saltney.

"Going forward Councillor Richard Lloyd and myself as joint ward county councillors for Saltney and Saltney Ferry will endeavour to find a solution for our residents living in the Mold Junction area, which is just outside the Stables Saltney medical practice catchment area boundary.

"We don’t want any of our residents to go through what Jordan and her family have experienced trying to register their new born baby at the local medical practice."

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been approached for comment on the matter.
