A FLINTSHIRE woman is hoping to strike gold in a major bodybuilding contest, after taking up the sport just a few months ago.

Magda Razminiene, from Connah's Quay, has qualified for the Physical Culture Association (PCA) Bodybuilding British Championships, after notching up a string of successes in the Athletic and Toned Body categories of various contests this year.

The 38-year-old, who works as a warehouse and logistics manager, has also succeeded in gaining sponsorship from Cheshire breakfast company, Mornflake, who make the porridge oats she eats everyday.

Magda said: "Like a lot of women I used to think that lifting weights would make me look manly. But when I started going to the gym I found I liked the definition it gave me and became interested in 'natural' bodybuilding which doesn't allow steroids or other performance enhancing drugs. Instead the focus is on building muscle through a balanced diet rich in protein and carbohydrates and of course training hard at cardio and strength.

"I'm so pleased to have gained sponsorship from Mornflake because healthy nutrition is a big part of this sport and the company does a great deal to promote healthy lifestyles through eating well and exercise. And I love its porridge oats!"

Magda's journey to competition success began in January when she started the 'reduction' process to reduce body fat and show muscle definition.

In May she made her debut on stage competing in the PCA First Timers contest in Wolverhampton where she was third in the Toned class.

In June, she was runner up in the PCA Naturals Championships in the Athletic figure class and achieved her second qualifier for the British Championships.

The event, to be staged in Telford in October, will see Magda compete once again in the Athletic Figure class.

To prepare for it, she's given up all her favourite foods, including dairy, and is training seven days a week, a mixture of weightlifting and cardio.

Magda, who works at Buckley Foods on Chester Road, added: "Bodybuilding takes dedication to train daily and follow a strict diet. Mornflake oats help with the energy I need.

"For me the hardest part was getting on stage for the first time. It was surreal but there's fantastic camaraderie in the natural bodybuilding world and we support each other. To get so far has spurred me on to continue."

Mornflake, millers of 'Mighty Oats' in Cheshire since 1675, is supporting Magda with her competition costs. She also visited the mill in Crewe to pick up her favourite breakfast products.

The company is also sponsor of the town's Crewe Alexandra Football Club and a regular headline supporter of the UK Triathlon series.

Its support of athletes has covered many genres over the years from international rowing and hockey teams to gym clubs and karate classes.

Mornflake managing director, James Lea, said: "Nature offers a fantastic natural energy source in oats and we love finding ways to promote them for good health. The fact that a natural bodybuilder like Magda includes them in her daily diet is testament to that. We are delighted to see our name connected with the championships and wish her all the best."
