WORK on redeveloping Wrexham Tennis Centre is finally set to get underway this week amid months of delays.
The centre is set to undergo a series of refurbishment and redevelopment works courtesy of £2m UK Government funding.
The money is being used to transform the centre, as well as being used to resurface all existing tennis courts, install floodlights, and make several other improvements.
In addition, the centre also plans to use this money to build three outdoor padel courts.
Planning permission was granted in December 2023, with work set to start in May of this year. However, the redevelopments hit a series of snags, with the start date of work being pushed back.
But in an update provided today (July 30) the Tennis Centre confirmed that the redevelopment is underway, with work starting this week and set to be complete in early 2025.
There's set to be several changes in the running of the centre while the development work takes place.
A spokesperson for the Wrexham Tennis Centre said: "We are delighted to announce that the tennis centre redevelopment is now underway.
"All the legal and funding requirements have been finalised and the contract with our lead contractor, Read Construction, has been signed.
"Customers can expect to see the first work starting on Monday 29th July and then running as previously planned through to early 2025."
The outdoor developments will be the first to take place, the spokesperson added: "This will be the first part of the project to start with the closure of all outside courts as they are prepared for re-fencing, resurfacing, drainage and the installation of floodlights.
"Also in this first phase will be the necessary groundworks for the installation of Padel courts and their canopy on what is currently the club courts at the front of the building.
"Please note that the whole of our outdoor space will be closed to the public during the construction.
"Internal work will start soon afterwards and will be focused on the modernisation of the public areas at the front of the building, in particular the toilet and changing facilities.
"Indoor tennis will continue. We will continue to keep the indoor courts open and available for our squads, training and social customers.
"As the front of the building and car park will be closed access will be via one of the side doors off the footpath on the southside of the building. Our reception team will be about to help you and we will continue to offer refreshments, albeit a slightly reduced offer.
"We anticipate there will be occasions where power or water are turned off which will prevent the centre from opening, these will be advised in good time."
While the developments are taking place, the car park at the tennis centre will be closed.
The spokesperson added: "Our carpark will be closed during the building works and customers can park in one of the following options, Plas Coch Primary School or in Sainsburys in Plas Coch Retail Park.
"Customers are advised to pay particular attention to Wrexham FC's home fixtures as parking in the area will be more difficult on those days, and is also chargeable on Plas Coch."
