MORE than 800 people have signed a petition in a bid to fix the potholes on "the worst road in Wrexham".

Last week, the Leader reported that Cllr Annette Davies of Gwersyllt West had launched a petition to resurface Summerhill Road.

The road has had long-standing issues with potholes, raising concerns amongst residents.

Cllr Davies launched the petition on Thursday (July 25) after repeated attempts to get Wrexham Council to resurface Summerhill Road were rejected.

Since then, 840 people have signed the petition (at time of writing), including staff and visitors to Pendine Park, the largest care complex in north Wales, which is located on Summerhill Road.

Cllr Davies, of Plaid Cymru, said: “I’ve written to the lead member for environmental services Terry Evans to ask him to come to see the situation for himself.

“This is now an issue of safety - people are describing a road that is dangerous and unfit for use because of repeated patching. I’m hoping that Cllr Evans will visit and see how bad it is. From there, the road should be prioritised to prevent a serious accident and further damage to vehicles.”

In addition to Cllr Davies' ongoing concerns, Wrexham residents have had their say on the road after commenting on the petition.

One person said: "I drive over 15,000 miles a year across the UK and can honestly say this stretch of road is amongst the worst in the UK. It is inconceivable that it is not ripped up and properly relaid. No amount of patching is ever going to work, within hours of a patch being done, 10 buses and hundreds of cars driving over it just rip the repair material out and make it worse. Nothing but a full relaying is going to work."

"I live on the Pendine Estate, and use Summerhill Road daily. The road is dangerous. People are driving the other side of the road to avoid pot holes, making it unsafe for pedestrians who have to walk on the road, as well as for oncoming traffic.

"Worst road in Wrexham."

Another added: "The state that this road has been left in by the council is verging on criminal negligence, it’s a danger to all who use it and repairs should be prioritised immediately "

"The road is an absolute disgrace, I have had to have the ball joint replaced on my car and my grandson has had a tyre blowout on the same section near Lex football pitch. The pathetic attempts at repair are laughable and I cannot believe the council pays for these when the repair lasts less than two days."

A Wrexham Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the condition of this particular road and the problems it is causing to drivers in the area. Like all other highway authority areas we have significant funding pressures for our road infrastructure and we are unable to address all the repairs the county’s roads are in need of.

"We are however hopeful that this particular road will be included in this year’s work programme which will be published in the near future.”
