MS for Wrexham

Congratulations to Eluned Morgan on becoming the new Leader of Welsh Labour. The Senedd is to be recalled on Tuesday 6 August where it is highly likely she will be elected as the First Minister of Wales.

I nominated Eluned and I am proud we will have a female First Minister for the very first time. I have known Eluned for many years and worked and campaigned with her for over a decade. She has the skills and ability to unite the Party and deliver for the people of Wales.

Schools have not long broken up for the summer holidays but parents and guardians are being urged to sign up for the Welsh Government’s Childcare Offer before the autumn term starts.

Under the scheme, working parents with children aged 3 to 4 can claim up to 30 hours of early education and childcare a week, for up to 48 weeks of the year.

Lessening the burden of childcare costs helps parents from Wrexham and across Wales return to work, increase their hours or work more flexibly.

The latest figures suggest around 20,000 children are supported each year through the Childcare Offer for Wales and I know it can make a big difference to families’ lives.

Applications for the Childcare Offer for the start of the autumn term in September are now open. All the information and support can be found online.

Engaging with young people is a key element and enjoyable aspect of my job and it was a pleasure to talk with students from Ysgol Rhosnesni.

The virtual meeting took place earlier this month and was arranged by The Politics Project. This educational organisation specialises in running digital surgeries which aim to build relationships between young people and their politicians.

During the Q&A session we discussed a wide range of topics that matter to the students. The programme is a great way to engage young people in politics and I am grateful to The Politics Project for organising the event.

Earlier this year, I approached all Wrexham’s secondary schools, as well as Coleg Cambria, highlighting the work of The Politics Project so I hope to take part in more surgeries with students in the not-too-distant future.
