A PAIR of award-winning restaurants are putting Chester on the map when it comes to food, drink and… bao buns?
Landing on the last Wednesday of every month, twenty eight and its sister restaurant Chef’s Table are hosting a new pop-up event combining Asian fusion dishes, 90’s hip hop and Giles Coren-approved specials.
‘Siu Tang’ is set to return to the Pepper Street venue on July 31.
Established by Chef’s Table’s Owner and Head Chef, Liam Mckay, during the 2020 nationwide lockdown, Siu Tang is the venues ‘cool kid alter ego’ and the perfect ode to R&B throwbacks.
What originated as Liam’s way to keep creative throughout lockdown by creating a takeaway-style offering, the pop-up has since grown in execution and become a permanent, monthly fixture due to popular demand.
The event maintains twenty eight’s laidback approach to dining and affordable sharing plates, with the perfect excuse for a mid-week cocktail.
The menu, led by twenty eight’s Head Chef, Jay Tanner, follows the restaurants usual style of small plates, as well as a selection of sharing platters and monthly specials to choose from. Recent dishes include steamed shiitake dumplings with house char siu, salt ‘n’ pepper wings with togarashi chilli mayo, and bang bang cauliflower with buffalo hot sauce.
The stand-out highlight however, is the events Signature Bao Buns, which have recently been praised by national restaurant critic, Giles Coren. In a recent review for The Times, he noted: “the bao bun with Korean fried chicken was as good as such a thing can be – worth the trip to Chester in itself. And just £6.”
The next Siu Tang dates are as follows: Wednesday, July 31; Wednesday, August 28 and Wednesday, September 25.
