A DRINK-driver who ran from the scene of a crash "covered in blood" has been given an opportunity to begin addressing his issues before he is sentenced.

Kelvin Davies, of Lamberton Drive in Brymbo, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Wednesday for sentence.

The 25-year-old had previously admitted offences of obstructing/resisting police, drink-driving and assaulting an emergency worker - all of which took place in Coedpoeth.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that on the night of February 26, police were called about an "intoxicated male" who had crashed his car.

The male, later identified as Davies, had run from the scene and was described as being "covered in blood."

Police attended and found the defendant in a nearby field, hiding in a bush.

He actively resisted arrest and when the handcuffs were put on, he punched out and struck an officer in the chest.

Tests confirmed he had 49 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, the limit being 35.

Euros Jones, defending, told the court his client has "a very serious crack cocaine addiction," and his parents had secured a four-week place for him in a Thailand-based detox unit, to commence on August 10.

His stay will involve intensive therapy to address his issues.

The Leader:

Mr Jones told the court the plan once the defendant returns entails him participating in Cocaine Anonymous.

"His parents are concerned about him coming back to this country because it's going to be a difficult time for him to continue the good work he'll have done in Thailand."

The court recognised steps had been taken to address the defendant's issues and agreed to take the "unusual course" of deferring sentence in order to allow him to complete the detox programme in Thailand.

He will be sentenced on September 11, just a few days after returning from the scheme and he was warned that all sentencing options remain open on that date.

An interim driving ban imposed at an earlier hearing was extended until the next hearing.
