A DRUG driver who was caught "swerving" between lanes on a major road was several times the limit for ketamine, a court heard.

Harry Koffman, of Sheppard Street in Brymbo, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.

The 21-year-old admitted that on March 22 this year, he drove a Ford motor vehicle on the A483 in Wrexham when the proportion of a controlled drug in his blood exceeded the specified limit.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that a around 11pm on March 21, police were advised of a possible drink or drug driver on the A55 at Dobshill.

An active search was conducted and shortly after midnight, officers found the vehicle on the A483 in Wrexham.

They observed it "swerving from lane one to two for no reason."

The vehicle came to a natural stop after exiting the A483 and when the driver - Koffman - was spoken to, he appeared "drowsy."

A positive roadside sample was followed up with a blood sample - which revealed he had 160 microgrammes of ketamine per litre of blood; the limit being 20.

Gary Harvey, defending, told the court Koffman's parents had become "very concerned" and taken "an active interest" in his behaviour.

"He's a groundworker and works most of the week," Mr Harvey said.

"I know the court will be concerned about him losing his employment as a result of his disqualification and that's likely to happen because he can't get to different places he's required to go.

The Leader:

"He is interacting with the Elms on a voluntary basis and was candid with police that he'd taken ketamine.

"He co-operated fully and pleads guilty today."

Mr Harvey added the inevitable driving ban would have a big impact on his client, adding: "The sooner he can get his licence back, the sooner he can get back to working."

Koffman received a £500 fine and must pay £85 costs, as well as a £200 victim surcharge.

He was banned from driving for 18 months.
