A MEMBER of one of the world's biggest bands has connected with his former Flintshire primary school.

Back in March, pupils at Ysgol Y Waun, in Gwernaffield, made an appeal for ex-pupil Jonny Buckland to get in touch.

They hoped for some star power from the Coldplay guitarist as part of the school's 50th anniversary celebrations.

He did make a visit during a well deserved break but it was during half term, posing for a selfie outside the school to share instead.

But he also sent a video answering questions posed by pupils and staff, including his favourite subject at school and what it's like to be in Coldplay.

Jonny shared a "real highlight" of his time at Ysgol Y Waun, which was winning the Ron Bishop Trophy with the school's Year 5 football team.

Amy Bletcher, who provides pastoral support at the village school, had helped the children in their quest to include Jonny.

She said: "The children went absolutely wild in assembly when they watched someone from such a world famous band say their names and answer their questions, it was fantastic to see their faces.

"The whole journey has been great and we've had such a positive reaction from both children and parents, from start to finish.

"We are so proud of our little village school and if at any point in the future Jonny decides to visit us, we will welcome him with open arms!"

Jonny also made some much appreciated donations to the school, including vinyl records for the raffle at the summer fair and a signed platinum award from their X&Y album of 2005, which will be hung at the school in his honour.

Amy added: "We couldn't of asked for anything better, as we knew how busy he was. We do really appreciate that he took the time to do this and acknowledge us.

"We're so proud that he came here, it means a lot to our little village school and wish him all the best for the future."
