A MAN caught carrying cannabis in a busy high street has been fined.

Matthew Jones, of Mwyn Ffordd in Minera, appeared at Mold Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 29-year-old admitted that on June 1 this year at Holywell he had in his possession a quantity of cannabis.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that on the afternoon in question, police were carrying out a community engagement event in a very busy Holywell High Street.

Officers noticed a smell of cannabis and identified the defendant as the cause.

A search revealed he had the drug in his possession.

Gary Harvey, defending, made limited representation on his client's behalf.

He told the court he is currently unemployed.

Mr Harvey told the court it was not clear why his client could not have been dealt with out of court for such an offence.

District Judge Gwyn Jones handed down a £140 fine and ordered the defendant to pay £85 costs, as well as a £56 victim surcharge.

He also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the seized cannabis.
