EAGLE-EYED Wrexham AFC fans have reacted with shock after this year's fixtures lists scheduled The Reds to play in the same city on the same day as fierce rivals Chester.

There is, of course, no love lost between the two sides who have clashed in several cross-border derbies down the years.

The clubs are 12 miles apart but are considered Welsh and English respectively, which only adds to the rivalry.

So, it was a surprise to many this week to find out that both Wrexham and Chester have been scheduled to play in the same city and on the same day, down in Cambridgeshire.

Wrexham are set to play at Peterborough United on Saturday, August 31, while Chester are booked in at Peterborough Sports on the same date.

Fans couldn't believe their eyes when they spotted the fixture clash.

Steven Blake wrote on X: "Not only do you have both Peterborough teams playing at home on the same day but rivals Chester and Wrexham travelling there on the Same day. Well done lads, superb planning."

Simon Johnson said: "Wrexham and Chester playing in Peterborough on the same day is the doomsday scenario that the police have been dreading. I believe that one of Keir Starmer’s first actions as Prime Minister is to call a Cobra meeting to address it."

Richard Emberton said: "That’ll soon be changed now."

Jason Jones said: "That's getting changed for sure!"

The Leader contacted Cambridgeshire Police to enquire about the fixture clash and whether or not the date would be changed for either club.

They told us that 'the decision to hold fixtures on particular dates would ultimately rest with the league'.

So, we brought the matter up with the English Football League.

They told us: "The EFL fixtures are collated prior to that of the National League, but were there any potential issues it would ultimately be for the Police / other stakeholders to object.

"We’ve not had any request to do so, and as a result at the moment there is no planned change to the schedule."

Wrexham AFC has also been approached for comment on whether or not plans are in place to re-schedule their fixture.
