SARAH ATHERTON says it has been an 'honour' to represent Wrexham as its Member of Parliament (MP).

The conservative politician had represented the constituency for four-and-a-half years.

But on Friday, (July 5) Labour candidate Andrew Ranger became the new Wrexham MP after receiving 15,836 in Thursday's election.

Mrs Atherton has since taken to social media to reflect on her time as Wrexham MP.

She said: "Wrexham, it has been an honour to serve as your Member of Parliament for the past 4 and a half years. Together, we achieved so much, and Wrexham is now on the map! I wish Andrew Ranger, the new MP for Wrexham, all the best."

She added: "Thank you to all those who voted for me yesterday, and to my team and wonderful volunteers for their hard work during the campaign."

Labour candidate Andrew Ranger received 15,836 votes, claiming just over 39 per cent of the overall total.

Mrs Atherton came second with 9,888 votes.

The result in Wrexham represents a successful turnaround around of 2019’s shock result, which saw the Conservatives take hold of the constituency for the first time in its history.
