Costa Coffee has revealed plans to create a new drive-thru coffee shop in Wrexham city centre.

The major coffee chain already has a drive-thru premises located on the Plas Coch Retail Park, as well as one in Ruabon.

A further Costa coffee shop could now be built on the Border Retail Park on Holt Road, with an approximate footprint of 1,800 square feet.

The proposals would see the outlet constructed on part of the retail park's car park, next to the Wickes DIY store.

UK-based property asset management company Waypoint is behind the scheme, which it said would help to boost the city's economy and create jobs.

In a planning statement submitted to Wrexham Council, the firm said: “The application is seeking permission for the erection of a new freestanding coffee shop with a drive thru facility on an established site.

“It is proposed that the new unit would predominantly sell hot and cold drinks, and cold food.

“The applicant has established a general need within the area, which has been identified by retailers who are looking for these types of retail units, with the associated and required infrastructure to facilitate its successful operation such as car parking and access.

“It is anticipated that the unit would provide for 15 full/part time jobs with flexible shift patterns, which is equivalent of eight full time jobs.”

They added: “The proposal would utilise an existing underused piece of land and has been designed carefully as to integrate well into the existing environment.

“The site provides an ideal location for further economic growth which would facilitate a flourishing economy.”

The proposed opening hours for the coffee shop are from 5am to 11pm, seven days a week.

A total of 31 parking spaces would be lost as a result of the plans, but the applicants said this was considered "acceptable".

A further 221 parking spaces would remain available at the site if the scheme goes ahead.

The local authority is expected to make a decision on the proposals at a later date.
