LESSONS at the primary school will be great outdoors thanks to a donation from Coleg Cambria.

The college donated bat houses, birdboxes, and mud kitchens to Ysgol Rhosymedre, near Wrexham.

The equipment was built by Entry to Construction learners at Cambria's Bersham Road site and will be used by reception pupils and children with additional learning needs (ALN).

Lecturer in Foundation Construction Amy Rowlands made the presentation along with colleague Edd Young and students Joe Dempsey and Zac Sprason-Jones.

"Every year we make outdoor learning equipment and items such as bat houses and birdboxes, which inspire conservation, and give them to different schools in the area," said Amy.

"This year we chose Rhosymedre as my son attended the ALN unit there, it's a fantastic school so we wanted to give something back.

"They were delighted to receive the donation, and we were only too pleased to help."

She added: "The entry learners at Bersham designed, built and painted everything, which has been a great experience for them, giving back to their local community and enhancing their skills – they did an amazing job."

The school has unveiled its new Multi-User Games Arena! Following the demolition of the old 'Chums' building, the school worked with the local authority to have the area re-designed to accommodate games and play.

A competition was set for the children to name the area and, following a vote by pupils, congratulations were given to Kyle Jenkins in Year 6.

Through grant funding from the Thomas Howell Trust, markings and games have been purchased for the pitch and ASAP Signs generously designed and put up a new sign, free of charge.

The school are extremely pleased with the outcome and staff, children and parents have commented positively not only on its appearance, but on how this has enhanced play and learning opportunities.

Pupils from the Flintshire school had an insightful visit to Glaslyn Ospreys near Porthmadog. The children were on their way to Bardsey Island but visited the project to learn more about the birds of prey, after reading the book Sky Hawk by Gill Lewis.

Ospreys have been breeding in the Glaslyn Valley for 20 years and the current pair, Elen and Aran, have three chicks. The pupils were able to view the birds on their nest from screens at the visitor centre and hide. The nest can also be viewed through high quality telescopes.

PUPILS from schools across the region have gone behind the scenes at Airbus.

As part of Airbus' Beluga Award incentive, students from six schools in North Wales and Cheshire were awarded a special visit at Airbus Broughton and the Beluga in a bid to inspire young people in STEM subjects.

The initiative aims to reward and inspire students to improve their attendance and grades to reach their full potential.

Participating schools included: Argoed High School in Myydd Isa, Ysgol Maes Garmon in Mold, St Richard Gwyn High School in Flint, Hawarden High School, St David's High School in Saltney Ferry and Whitby High School.

During the visit, the students learned about the crucial role the Beluga plays in transporting wings built in Broughton to Airbus' final assembly lines in Germany and France. The children spoke with pilots and had a guided tour of the A320 wing production line and onsite fire station. To top it off, they had a chance to talk with the latest early career cohort at Airbus.

Airbus head of supply chain operations UK, Paul Kilmister, said: "The Beluga Awards is a fantastic way to help inspire young people to realise their full potential, by rewarding them with a once in a lifetime opportunity to see how we manufacture wings at Airbus and get onboard the Beluga.

"This is achieved by the students improving their studies in STEM subjects and making improvements throughout the nine months of the programme. I hope the visits leave a lasting impression and we will be welcoming more than a few of the pupils who took part in this event back to our plant in the years ahead."

Kayleigh Brummel, Careers Wales, said: "We had a great day at Airbus. It was amazing to visit the fire station to understand the role the fire crew play. Seeing and going on both the fire engine and Beluga has been a fantastic experience for the kids. Our hosts Colette Affaya, Harvey Tattum, Beth Owen, Benjamin Hughes and Alicia Fairhurst were brilliant."

Riley Edwards, a student at St David's High School said: "It's been an amazing experience. Visiting the fire station and seeing the Beluga was brilliant. I've really enjoyed the visit and have learned lots of things about Airbus."
