A DEDICATED charity champion from Connah's Quay is preparing for his annual rowing challenge in aid of a good cause.

The Leader has reported many times over the years on the ongoing efforts by Ray Woolley, 84, to support Cancer Research UK.

And at 11am on Sunday, July 7 he is to set off on his yearly row from Connah's Quay Docks to Chester.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to Cancer Research UK on behalf of Deeside Voluntary Committee.

The annual row began after Mr Woolley sadly lost his brother Reg to Cancer.

Mr Woolley told the Leader: "I've been doing this for 49 years now, I'm doing it in memory of Keith Marland and Brian Thomas.

"Everyone is welcome to come down and support, it would be great to see people there cheering me on. I'm hoping to get as many people down there as possible.

Mr Woolley explained he comes from a fishing family; an activity he has also carried on throughout his life.

He uses his fishing boat, still loaded up with nets and equipment, to complete the challenges.

Casey Burke, a friend of Mr Woolley, said: "He’s a relentless fundraiser and a completely selfless human, he will do anything for anyone and deserves national recognition for his lifetime devotion to fundraising."

Mr Woolley has previously encouraged others to join the voluntary committee and help to raise money for good causes.
