A FLINTSHIRE high school has issued a statement amid parents' complaints over a "ridiculous" policy of not allowing boys to wear shorts in hot weather.

Some parents of children attending Flint High School have made complaints claiming "discrimination" against male pupils during the current heatwave.

One parent, wishing to remain anonymous, told the Leader: "It's absolutely ridiculous that girls have the option of wearing skirts or trousers, but boys have to wear trousers.

"Pupils are being placed into isolation for not adhering to the school's uniform policy. I feel it's discrimination against male pupils."

They added: "There are a number of parents who are thinking of sending their children to school in a skirt to make the point."

Another parent added: "They're allowed to wear skirts, but not shorts. If that's what it takes to make boys feel more comfortable during the hot weather, then so be it."

Flint High School headteacher, Claire Millington, said: "Our school uniform policy does not currently permit students to deviate from the agreed uniform and this includes wearing shorts during periods of warm weather.

"We have spoken to any parent that has contacted the school and explained how uniform policies work and the process involved in any changes or amendments to a policy.

"Any future concerns from parents will be dealt with through our school procedures."
