A LIVE carving demonstration carried out by a well-known Wrexham sculptor proved to be a hit over the weekend.

Simon O'Rourke has become a household name throughout north Wales down the years for his amazing sculptures he carves with his chainsaw from wood.

Back in 2019, his giant dragon at Bethesda caused 'traffic to slow down' in order to catch a glimpse of it.

More recently, his Deadpool sculpture - in honour of Wrexham AFC co-chairman Ryan Reynolds - caught the eye on social media and beyond as it raised funds for charity.

Back in March, the Leader reported that Simon's life work was set to be put under the spotlight with a documentary of his own showcasing his life and his creations.

And the success continued for Simon on Sunday (June 23) as he carried out a well-attended live carving demo.

That was the culmination of his first-ever solo sculpture exhibition which has been on show at the Ebenezer Chapel in Cefn Mawr over the past few weeks.

It allowed guests to pop along and see a range of sculptures, which were also up for sale.

On the final day, a large crowd gathered to witness Simon in action as he carried out a live carving demonstration.

Speaking after the exhibition came to an end, Simon said: "Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who came along to or supported, in some way, my first solo art exhibition at Ebenezer Chapel in Cefn Mawr these last two weeks.

"We had a brilliant turn out of around 250 people, and the event finished yesterday with a live carving demo. We sold a few items and gained a commission too.

"And most importantly, it brought the community together. Huge thanks to Dave (Metcalfe, who runs Ebenezer Chapel) and his team for all their hard work, help and company. It was a blast. Thank you. Looking forward to next year already!"
