A PLACARD promoting an MP who is the centre of an investigation by the Gambling Commission was defaced.

Craig Williams, the Conservative candidate for the new Montgomeryshire and Glyndwr constituency, is facing a probe by the Gambling Commission after he placed a bet on the date of the General Election just days before Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called it.

Mr Williams, who served as Mr Sunak’s parliamentary private secretary, has apologised for an "error of judgement" but declined to comment on whether he placed the bet with insider information.

A placard, seen in Caersws, Powys (in Mr Williams' prospective constituency which also covers south western areas of Wrexham) was recently defaced with a sellotaped note that reads ‘Sponsored by Paddy Power’.

Mr Williams, who served as the MP for Montgomery until the election was called, is alleged to have placed a £100 bet on a July polling day some three days before Mr Sunak named the date as July 4, at a Ladbrokes in his constituency.

He previously told the BBC: “I clearly made a huge error of judgment, that’s for sure, and I apologise.”

The Gambling Commission is currently investigating four members of the Conservative Party for bets purportedly made concerning the date of the general election day.
