Haywire Theatre's socially focused project, 'How to Feed a Town', is coming to Theatr Clwyd in July.

Collaborating with Well-Fed Ltd and Flintshire County Council, the production presents an intimate portrayal of community spirit, change, togetherness, and the struggle against food poverty in Flintshire, North Wales.

The story stages the life of Leanne, a woman raised and recently returned to her hometown, Gwaun, navigating the challenges of starting anew whilst not being able to cook or the money to learn.

Surrounded by watchful eyes that include a Council support officer, resolute locals, and her daughter Maisie, Leanne goes on a journey to feel full, and learn how to make something out of nothing.

The project started in spring 2022, where Haywire Theatre and Well-Fed Ltd began an extensive community outreach.

Over five months, the team conducted detailed discussions, workshops, and engaged in arts programs, aimed to document the Flintshire public's opinions on food poverty.

Involving more than 600 community members, the team collected interview material, forming a data bank straight from the residents' lived experiences.

The community's insights held them find ways for presenting their realities on stage.

They learnt that the Flintshire residents view on food and community are linked, and that they wanted to have their voices shared openly and publicly.

The play's script was created with a community co-written 'Writers' Room' that ran from November 2022 to January 2023.

This platform allowed six writers, including three from Flintshire itself, to take the information from the outreach programme and convert it into a script.

'How to Feed a Town', now ready for stage, and it will head out tour featuring shows at Theatr Clwyd and other key community venues across Flintshire and beyond.

Available in both English and Welsh, the play aims to boost community cohesion and raise awareness about the daily realities of food poverty.

The show will be performed at Theatr Clwyd on July 23 at 7.30pm.

The play will run for two hours with an interval.

Tickets are available on a 'Pay What You Feel' basis, supporting the spirit of togetherness.
