TWO 40mph stretches of main road in Flintshire are set to reduce to 20mph.

Stretches of the A5026 Holway Road and Whitford Street in Holywell are reducing to 20mph on June 21.

On the A5026 Holway Road, the 40mph limit will drop to 20 for 371 metres from a point 46 metres south east of its junction with the A5026 Whitford Street.

On the A5026 Whitford Street, the speed limit will drop from its junction with the A5026 Holway Road, for a distance of 47 metres in an easterly direction.

Flintshire Council has said the speed limit is being reduced to improve road safety along the routes to Ysgol Gwenffrwd and St Winefrides School. 

A statement said: "A successful bid was made to the Welsh Government and as such Flintshire County Council has been successful in obtaining funding to implement substantial safety measures (for which the 20mph Speed Limit forms part of) to address congestion and reduce unnecessary vehicle movements experienced along the routes to Ysgol Gwenffrwd and St Winefrides School.

"Many of the problems identified along the route relate to high levels of vehicle usage and associated congestion both within the immediate curtilage of the school as well as along a number of access routes in the vicinity.

"The implementation of a proposed restricted road speed limit along the extents of the proposed scheme will address issues of speeding whilst also ensuring the route is brought up the required standard to promote the usage of active modes of travel through the concept of shared space."

It adds: "This much needed speed limit reduction will address issues of speeding and will improve safety for pedestrians and vulnerable road users, whilst reducing congestion and improving traffic flow.

"The reduced congestion has benefits for the safety of the children going to and from school and will also improve air quality and quality of life for local residents.

"The Restricted Road Speed Limit (20mph), forms an integral part of a safer routes in the Community scheme, funded by Welsh Government. Other such measures include new crossing facilities and improved walking and cycling provisions."
