The school has worked hard over the last few years to promote active travel to and from school. Many activities have taken place, including scooter skills sessions, Dr Bike maintenance days, cycling proficiency courses, The Big Walk and Wheel, as well as mapping routes to school.

The award was presented to the Eco Council and Cllr David A Bithell during a recent school assembly.

Cllr Bithell, chair of governors Ysgol Yr Hafod, said he was "delighted" to attend the presentation of the Silver Award, "only the second school in Wrexham to receive such an award".

He added: "The work the school has carried out together with the Eco Council should be recognised especially when we are encouraging all pupils and parents to walk to school to reduce parking issues around the school site.

"The school's governing body also support active travel and I am sure will recognise this fantastic achievement."

Hannah Meulman, Active Journeys officer from Sustrans Cymru said: "Ysgol yr Hafod have been committed to promoting safe active travel for a number of years, throughout the building works.

"They have created an ethos in the school to encourage and enable walking, wheeling and cycling to allow for safer streets and healthier school journeys. Well done."

The school had the honour of being invited to two of last week's D-Day commemorations.

At 9.30am, on June 6, Vanessa Wright-Davies, lead learner for Year 7 and curriculum lead for history, accompanied students Cian Roberts and Maddie Jones to Cefn Mawr Cenotaph, where they placed a wreath on behalf of staff and students of Ysgol Rhiwabon, along with some of the other local schools.

At midday, Mrs Wright-Davies and teaching assistant Jan Potts had the privilege of taking siblings Jake and Katie McGlynn to Wrexham's D-Day 80th anniversary commemoration event in St Giles' Church.

After the service Jake and Katie took part in the procession, where they proudly carried flags of the nations involved 80 years ago.

Mrs Wright-Davies said: ' All four students were a credit to their families and the school and we were delighted to have been invited to take part'."

This term, Year 8 French classes at Ysgol Rhiwabon have been learning about all things Parisian, including the food.

As part of the subject, Sally Evans, French curriculum lead, saw their two Year 8 classes flip it out during a 'crêpe off'.

The brief was to make their crêpes as French looking as possible, without affecting taste.

The Year 8 students had a great time, planning, cooking and flipping!

Mrs Evans said: "It really was a good way to get the pupils thinking about the wider cultural aspect of France and Paris. Everyone enjoyed themselves and the results were amazing."

The school has been celebrating 10 years of being open. To celebrate, they had a big top circus in school to teach the children circus skills, such as hula hooping, plate spinning and diablo, to name but a few.

They were entertained by Mr Tick and Mr Tock in a presentation performance with participation from the pupils. All the children throughout the school had a fantastic day.

On the same day, the Friends of Tŷ Ffynnon organised games in the hall for the children and the canteen staff provided a circus themed lunch of hot dogs, doughnuts and pop corn.

"Giving our students exciting opportunities to improve and shine is at the heart of our Welsh language provision. However, it's not just about enjoyment and achievement; my colleagues and I are determined to play our part in realising the Welsh Government target of a million speakers.

"Llongyfarchiadau, Well done to Lola, Amelia, Phoebe, Lexi, Tilly, Ollie, Maddie, Ben, Callum, Jess, Imy and Dayana!"

Ysgol Penygelli, Coedpoeth

As part of their literacy work, pupils in Years 5 and 6 have been learning about journalistic writing.

Class teacher Elaine Whybro invited the Leader's community content editor, Claire Pierce, to the school to speak with the children.

Year 5 and 6 pupils at Ysgol Penygelli grilled the Leaders Claire Pierce on journalism.

Claire said: "It was initially a bit overwhelming being in front of such a large group but they made me feel incredibly welcome.

"The children asked plenty of questions that really showed they had an interest in the subject.

"They're well thought out questions showed they were curious but also responding to new information. We might have some future journalists here, I really had to think fast about my answers.

"It was a privilege to be a part of their work, and I hope they were as engaged by me and I was by them."

Urdd success

Two sisters competed in the local and county stages and qualified for the Urdd 2024.

Natalie Halsall, 12, competed as an individual entry for Welsh Learner Recitation. The Ysgol Clywedog student was delighted to come second in the Llefanu Unigol Bl 7, 8 and 9 D category with Cais i'r Prifathro.

It marks the third consecutive year of success for Natalie in the Urdd, as she has previously come second in the Welsh Learner recitation category (for her age group) in both 2023 and 2022. An amazing achievement for the Welsh learner.

Ysgol Rhostyllen pupil Erin Halsall, eight, also competed in the Urdd's Welsh Learner category representing the Wrexham primary school.

Erin participated in the Llefanu Unigol Bl 3 and 4 category, with an incredibly strong performance of Cadw-mi-gei. It was a talented group of 18 Welsh learners and Erin narrowly missed out on a medal.

The sisters celebrated with strawberries and chocolate, a bit of shopping on the stalls and a few rides in the fun fair.

Both children have been able to achieve this standard and confidence through the dedication, support and teaching by Lowri Birchall, a teaching assistant from Ysgol Rhostyllen.

Mrs Birchall has given a huge amount of time to bring out the talent in these girls, plus other pupils in the school, over the last few years. Fingers crossed for next year.

AN MS has welcomed "eager" pupils from two schools in Wrexham county to the Senedd, where they learned about Welsh democracy.

Llŷr Gruffydd, who represents North Wales, gave pupils from Ysgol Bryn Tabor, in Coedpoeth and Ysgol Bro Alun, in Gwersyllt, a guided tour of the Welsh Parliament.

Gruffydd, also Plaid Cymru's Shadow Minister for Rural Affairs, spoke with the young people about how the Senedd works and about his role fighting on behalf of constituents and scrutinising the work of the Welsh Government.

He said: "It was great to speak with pupils from Ysgol Bryn Tabor and Ysgol Bro Alun, during their visit to the Senedd so they could learn about the work that goes on here.

"They were very eager to find out how democracy works in Wales and they asked a lot of thoughtful, intelligent and incisive questions.

"They clearly demonstrated that young people want to be engaged in politics, so they can shape how it impacts on their lives.

"Fostering this kind of positive engagement from young people with the Senedd is important for the future of our democracy in Wales.

"I would like to say a thank you to the pupils from Ysgol Bryn Tabor and Ysgol Bro Alun as well as the members of staff for extending to me the privilege of speaking with them about the work of the Senedd."
