EVENTS will be taking place in Deeside this week to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

This Thursday (June 6) will mark the anniversary of when Allied troops landed on the coast of Normandy. It was the largest amphibious invasion ever executed, and was the start of the campaign to liberate Europe and defeat Nazi Germany in the Second World War.

Veterans and Community Hub (VC Hub) CIC, based at Caffinaafi on Fron Road in Connah's Quay, is organising a number of events to mark the anniversary.

At Caffinaafi, they will be joined by Royal Welch Fusiliers Comrades Association 's Shotton & Deeside Branch, and a military reenactment organisation which will have many items of interest, such as items and equipment used during WW2.

There will be music and films playing, with readings of witness accounts by Ian Gibbons.

The team at Caffinaafi have also been working hard to offer the following D-Day-themed specials:

  • Beef stew with crusty bread.
  • Gurkha chicken curry with flatbread.
  • Wartime Blitz soup.

The Leader: Over at Connah's Quay Labour Club on Fron Road, there will be The VC Hub Model Group members who have worked tirelessly to build a diorama depicting the D-Day landings.

There will also be displays of RAF aircraft and other models as part of their collaboration with Models for Heroes - a charitable organisation which supports the UK armed forces and emergency services through model making.

There will also be a brief service at Connah's Quay and Shotton War Memorial at 11am.
