WREXHAM’S incumbent MP is calling on the relevant parties to address the ongoing issues with parking on match days in the town.

Sarah Atherton MP has called on Wrexham Council, Wrexham AFC and North Wales Police to ramp up efforts to find sustainable, long-term solutions to address existing issues with parking during Wrexham AFC matchdays.

Given the football club’s continued growth, more and more fans are visiting the Racecourse Ground, with an average attendance of almost 12,000 last season.

A by-product of the success and growth since Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over has been the increased volume of pedestrians and motorists in the vicinity of the stadium during home fixtures.

While the authorities have taken action, including restricting access and implementing road closures, residents have continuously complained about inconsiderate parking throughout the season.

Following the season’s ending, which saw the Reds achieve back to back promotions into League One, Ms Atherton has called on the relevant authorities to clamp down on inconsiderate parking by extending enforcement measures.

Wrexham’s MP has written to the relevant Chief Officer at Wrexham Council to urge that stakeholders commit to finding solutions to reported issues. She has emphasised that with the club’s ownership discussing the possibility of expanding the stadium to a capacity of 55,000 in the long-term, the off-season represents a useful window of time in which authorities can fully explore measures as sustainable solutions.

Sarah Atherton MP said: “It has been fantastic to watch the meteoric rise of Wrexham AFC. The club’s back-to-back promotions have vitalised the city and fans are flocking to the Racecourse which is now packed to the rafters for every home game.

“One consequence of this growth, however, is the increased volume of traffic and pedestrians around the stadium on matchdays. This has brought challenges to residents living in the vicinity of the Racecourse, including limited or forbidden entrance and exit points, whether that be due to inconsiderate parking or road closures.

“With works to expand the Kop currently ongoing and the club’s ownership group planning to further extend the stadium capacity in the future, these next few months provide a great opportunity for authorities to find a sustainable, long-term solution to this issue.

“That is why I have written to Wrexham Council to urge that additional measures are deployed, including increased enforcement, to combat inconsiderate parking and to protect the interests of residents living around the stadium, as the club continues to grow.”

Wrexham Council, Wrexham AFC and North Wales Police were approached for a comment.
