POLICE have issued a warning over a recent "increase" in members of the public trying to smuggle items into HMP Berwyn.

North Wales Police has said there has been an increase in it happening over the last couple of days, which has lead to arrests.

Police have issued the following guidance regarding items being smuggled into prison:

It is a criminal offence to convey items into any prison without authority contrary to section 40B(1)(a) and (6) of the Prison Act 1952.

The offence is split into various lists which are:

List A

  • a controlled drug (as defined for the purposes of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971)
  • an explosive
  • any firearm or ammunition (as defined in section 57 of the Firearms Act 1968)
  • any other offensive weapon (as defined in section 1(9) of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984).


List B

  •  alcohol (as defined for the purposes of the Licensing Act 2003)
  •  a mobile telephone
  •  a camera
  •  a sound-recording device.


Anyone found doing this could end up in prison themselves facing a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and/or a large fine.
