WREXHAM'S MP Sarah Atherton has launched a survey to give Wrexham residents the chance to ensure their voices are heard regarding the 20mph speed limit. 

The survey has been launched on her website offering Wrexham residents an opportunity to make their voices heard regarding the future of the Welsh Labour Government’s 20mph policy.

Wrexham’s Member of Parliament is canvassing residents to find out their views on which roads they believe should be exempted from the new blanket speed limit which came into force in September 2023, with constituents reportedly expressing their grievances at congestion and chaos on Wrexham's roads.

Transport Secretary Ken Skates announced last month that from September, councils across Wales will have the authority to reinstate 30mph on certain roads.

Wrexham’s MP welcomed the Transport Secretary’s change in direction but maintained that the Welsh Government must go further by committing to fully repealing the policy.

As a strong opponent of the blanket 20mph speed limit, Ms Atherton has committed to continuing to lobby the Welsh Government to fully repeal the policy, but has maintained that the reduced speed limit should be maintained around schools, hospitals, parks and in other areas where there is a large volume of pedestrians present.

Wrexham’s MP is currently in the process of making enquiries with Wrexham Council regarding its plans following the Transport Secretary’s announcement, however, Wrexham Council stated they didn't expect 'wholesale changes' to the 20mph limit across the city

In the meantime, Ms Atherton is actively encouraging residents to contact her via her website to share their views on the policy and its future across the county borough.

She said: “I am continuing to listen to my constituents, and I want to know what they are thinking about Welsh Labour’s 20mph policy.

“I will be engaging with residents across Wrexham between now and September in order to find out which roads should be prime candidates for exemption from Welsh Labour’s blanket speed limit, before feeding that information back to the council as part of its decision-making process.”

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: "The Cabinet Secretary has set out his three phase plan for 20mph: a national listening programme, working in partnership with local government, and the supporting them to make changes.

"Building from the consensus that lower speeds are right around schools, hospitals, and in built-up residential areas the Cabinet Secretary has been busy engaging with the widest possible range of voices on 20mph."
