A BUSY Wrexham road is facing disruption as major gas works take place - with a councillor urging motorists not to use it as an excuse to drive the wrong way up one-way streets.

Wales & West Utilities is currently working in the New Road area to upgrade the gas network.

Four-way traffic lights are in place along New Road at its junction with Stansty Road.

A spokesperson for the company said: “As our work continues along New Road into Rhosddu Road, we will remove these lights and put a one-way system in place along the road on May 20.

"Barring any unforeseen circumstances, we will complete our work and fully reopen the road at the end of June.

"We’re sorry for any disruption that our works may cause. We know working on busy roads like this is not ideal, but the work really is essential to upgrade the network and to keep the gas flowing to heat homes and power businesses in the area, making sure the gas network is fit for the future and can play its part in delivering reliable and affordable green energy."

Rhosddu councillor, Marc Jones, said: "This is not an excuse to drive up one-way roads the wrong way. This is happening as sat navs ignore reality and idiots looking for short-cuts take chances.

"Respecting “Access only” traffic signs on other streets in Rhosddu is something I’ve raised with the local police inspector and am awaiting a response.

"There are already pressures on our residential streets because of people using them as free car parks to go to work in town. Inconsiderate and illegal driving is making matters worse."
