WREXHAM Council say they are not expecting to make "wholesale changes" to the 20mph restrictions currently in place across the city. 

Last month, the new Welsh Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Ken Skates, announced that he is open to making changes to the Welsh Government’s 20mph blanket policy and is asking councils in Wales to exempt roads from this blanket 20mph speed limit.

Following the announcement, the local authority said they "welcomed" the decision. 

The controversial 20mph scheme proved very unpopular with residents in Wales, with over 500,000 signing a petition to remove the limit. 

Between April and July of this year Welsh Government have announced that they will now be undertaking a programme of listening in relation to their 20mph policy.

However, Wrexham Council say they are not expecting large changes to the 20mph scheme and insist that any changes are likely to take more than six months. 

In a statement posted on the council's website today (May 3) they said: "We are not expecting wholesale changes to the current speed restrictions. Any future amendments will be of a target nature.

"Any changes that we propose are unlikely come into force immediately. This is because we will need to follow statutory traffic orders and procedures.

"These changes can take from six months plus. There will also be a need to put in place tests against the guidance to ensure appropriateness of any changes."

The council also says they will be relying on a "dedicated funding stream" to action any future changes.

Deputy Leader with responsibilities for strategic transport Cllr David A Bithell said: “The implementation of the 20mph scheme has proved to be somewhat divisive, so I welcome the Welsh Governments programme of listening.”

"I invite anyone with concerns over 20mph restrictions on roads in Wrexham to contact us via the dedicated email address, and to give reasons why you think the restrictions in a particular location should be amended.”
