THE NEW Lidl supermarket coming to Flintshire is set to cause disruption for several months throughout major construction works.
Set to replace the former Somerfield/Co-op store in Connah's Quay, construction work has finally commenced on the new supermarket after over a decade of being vacant.
Lidl will relocate from its current site at Deeside Retail Park to the new location, which will open by December 2024.
Last week, the construction company overseeing the project, Braithwaite Group, told the Leader of the two planned phases of work due to complete the project.
The new store is expected to bring 40 new jobs, including the 15 staff already located at Deeside Retail Park.
It’s 1,334 m2 sales area will feature the much-loved Lidl bakery, which was recently crowned the most popular supermarket bakery in the UK with a market share of 18.2%, beating Tesco and Sainsburys.
Customers will also have access to 160 car parking spaces, including disabled, parent and child spaces as well as Electric Vehicle Charing points in the car park.
Lidl GB’s Regional Head of Property, Stuart Jardine, said: “This is a brilliantly located site that acts as a gateway to the town, forming many people’s first impressions of the area.

"Over time it’s unfortunately fallen into disrepair therefore, we’re really excited to have the opportunity to revitalise the space and make it somewhere that residents can be proud of.
“We are sincerely grateful to the Connah’s Quay community for their patience, understanding and support during this stage of the new store’s development.
"Whilst a bit of disruption can never be entirely avoided, our team will work hard to ensure that it is kept to a minimum and we get the new store open as soon as possible so that shoppers can start benefitting from Lidl’s high-quality products at the best value prices.”
