CLOSE to 900 runners took part in the Inaugural Wrexham 10K race in the city this morning.

The race, organised by Adrenaline Sporting Events, took part this morning (April 21), starting and finishing in the city centre.

Runners of all abilities, from all over the UK took part, with 22 trophies up for grabs.

The race got underway just after 9am on Queen Square, before runners headed down Ruabon Road towards Rhostyllen.

They then turned left onto Hafod Road and completed a circular loop surrounding Erddig, before heading back towards the city centre across the finish line.

Michael Young took first spot in the men's event with a very impressive time of 32 minutes and 54 seconds, while Carla Davies won the women's event with a time of 36 minutes and 17 seconds, which also secured her 6th place overall.

Each finisher collected a unique Welsh-themed medal at the finish line on Queen Square, which were handed out by staff and pupils from St Mary's school in Overton.

Wrexham AFC legend Mickey Thomas was on hand to start the race alongside Mayor of Wrexham Andy Williams and JCB Transmissions Operations Director Craig Weeks.

JCB were the title sponsor of the event, and there are hopes that the race will become a 'big event' for the area.

Ahead of the race, Mickey Thomas said: "900 people here, it’s amazing, I couldn’t believe when they told me how many people were running it. There’s a great turnout and there’s going to be loads of people wanting to win.

"I was a good runner when I was younger, I conditioned myself, running in the morning, in the evening and no one could run more than me on the pitch.

"It’s going to be a tough race, but the competition is the most important thing, people getting out of bed and having a go.

"I wish I was running it!"
