A Wrexham man who got into a fight with other people over queue-jumping has received a hefty fine.

Garin Griffiths, of Corunna Court, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old admitted that on February 24, he used threatening or abusive words or behaviour in Wrexham city centre.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, explained the charge arose after Griffiths was spotted in a group of males who were fighting each other in Hope Street at around 11pm.

He was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station.

Patrick Geddes, defending, told the court: "He knows he should have just walked away and that he had the opportunity to do so.

"It all seems to stem from an earlier incident which was not captured on CCTV.

"He'd been out with his partner and had some issues regarding these other males pushing into a queue.

"It results in a physical altercation in which Mr Griffiths says he was assaulted first.

"The police unfortunately only turn up when he hits out.

"It doesn't appear anyone else has been arrested or charged with this which is somewhat unfair and somewhat harsh on him."

Deputy District Judge Paul Conlon told the defendant: "It is perhaps unfortunate that you are the one who appears in the dock, given there appear to have been a number of offenders fighting in public, creating disorder in Hope Street.

"Nevertheless, you used violence."

Griffiths received a £400 fine and must also pay a £160 victim surcharge, as well as £85 costs.

Mr Geddes put forward a repayment rate of £50 per month on behalf of his client.

But the Judge rejected the offer given the defendant is in full time employment, telling him:

"This isn't a hire purchase, Mr Griffiths. It's a fine."

He set the minimum repayment rate at £100 a month.
