THE support between a charity and a Flintshire school was evident at a recent event that brought the two together.

The Lord's Taverners Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral, is a charity that helps give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance.

Through their fundraising, members have supported specialist school Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, in Flint, on many occasions.

This school provides a high quality education for pupils aged 11 to 19 years with varying degrees of learning difficulties, from Severe Learning Difficulties, and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties. Ysgol Maes Hyfryd has also been named Specialist Provision School of the Year at the recent Leader Education Awards.

To date the Lord's Taverners have helped to provide a mini bus, take the children on trips, and donate funds towards specialist playground equipment and sensory room items.

Three of members from the charity are set to take part in the London Marathon on April 21, and runners made a special visit to the school.

As part of their training, the trio - Caroline Mogan-Jones, Dan Hampson and DJ Jono - ran from Chester to the Flintshire school, with children ready to welcome them with banners and waving flags.

Headteacher Helen Millard said: "It was a real privilege to welcome the runners to our school who will be running in the London Marathon to raise money for the Lord's Taverners charity.

"They were welcomed by our young people who were cheering them on as they arrived, we even had a finish line for them, it was a great atmosphere.

"After their run to the school, they spent time visiting classes across the school and chatting to the young people. The visit really focused their minds on the real reason why this charity is so important to so many young people who have disabilities and complex needs.

"The charity has been extremely supportive of our school over the years. Our special thanks to Trudy Burrows, chair of chair of Lord's Taverners Cheshire, North Wales and Wirral as she has supported our school for many years and we are very grateful for this.

"As a school community we wish the runners the best of luck on the day of the marathon and thank them for supporting young people with disabilities and complex needs.

"Lord's Taverners makes a huge difference to the lives of those young people and we hope as many people can support the charity.

Trudy Burrows, added: "It was just heart-warming to see when the runners crossed the finish line at the school.

"Headteacher Helen is a wonderful advocate for the school, she's one of the most impressive women I've ever met.

"She constantly helps us fundraise but applies for funding in the normal manner anyone else would."
