For St David's Day of Friday, all pupils went to school in their house colours of: Alun - red, Ceiriog - Yellow, Gwenfro - Green and Dyfi - white. All the houses are named after rivers in North Wales.

The children then took part in the school Eisteddfod, where they had the opportunity to perform a Welsh poem with their peers.

They also had to sing a Welsh song that they had learnt and these performances were all judged by our chair of governors, Margaret Madoc-Jones.

All of the children had a fantastic day sharing their performances and were extremely proud of all the hard work they had put in prior to the celebration.

The overall winners of the competition were Ceiriog.

Girls at the Wrexham primary school will receive a new Premier League primary stars football kit, as part of the League's ongoing support for women's and girls' football.

The school applied to receive the kit, which includes 13 outfield sets and one goalkeeper set, plus optional Nike 2.0 hijabs, thanks to their involvement in the Premier League Primary Stars programme with Wrexham AFC Community Trust.

Delivered in partnership with Nike, the Premier League primary stars Kit Scheme will see more than 58,000 girls in over 4,000 primary schools across England and Wales receive the free football kit, featuring the Premier League and No Room For Racism emblems.

Steve Dale, interim head of community at Wrexham AFC Community Trust, said: "I am delighted that we will be providing free kits to Penygelli in partnership with the Premier League primary stars scheme.

"The school has a long-standing relationship with the Wrexham AFC Community Trust, and it is great that we have been able to supply kit for the next generation of girls.

"We hope this kit can inspire and motivate as many pupils to keep active and enjoy the many benefits that sport has to offer."

Richard Masters, Premier League chief executive, added: "Football is a game that everyone can enjoy, and it has the ability to empower and inspire young people in the classroom, the playground and on the pitch.

"I hope the girls enjoy their new Premier League kit and that they continue to reap the many benefits that football can bring, both on and off the pitch."

The school also had a visit from footballer Erin Lovett, who plays for the Wrexham AFC Women's team.

Defender Erin watched and encouraged the pupils as they played a football tournament to launch the school's new football kit.

Ysgol Penygelli has been involved with the Wrexham AFC Community Trust, in Premier League Primary Stars activity for seven years. The Kit Scheme is just one element of the Premier League's primary school education programme, Premier League Primary Stars, and builds upon the 7,000 free football kits that have already been given away via the Premier League's primary schools programme since 2017.

Year 6 at the Flintshire primary have been working on the topic Extreme Earth, including pupils researching natural disasters that have happened in Wales.

They then wrote their own newspaper reports, based on the Aberfan disaster of 1966. The tragic event saw the collapse of a colliery spoil tip, killing 116 children and 28 adults as it engulfed a school and houses.

Class teacher Josie Cudworth welcomed the Leader's community content editor, Claire Pierce, to talk about writing news and putting articles together.

Pupils also put their own questions to her on a range of subjects about working on a newspaper.

Claire said: "The children didn't hold back in their quizzing, and it always a pleasure to share the importance of balanced and accurate writing.

"Hopefully I've managed to pass on some tips they can use when putting together their school work.

"The articles they produced on Aberfan are well written and presented. We may have a future journalist or two in the mix."

For St David's Day, youngsters took part in traditional festivities, including reading and singing with their Welsh bear, Ticw, who teaches the children new words in Welsh.

They eat and try traditional Welsh food, including bara brith and Welsh cake, as well as getting creative painting daffodils and colouring in the Welsh dragon.

Children dressed in traditional Welsh colours, Welsh tops or rugby/sports tops, listened to Welsh stories and played Welsh matching games, with help from Ticw.
