A FLINTSHIRE high school has closed today (Friday, January 19) due to a heating system issue.

Alistair Stubbs, headteacher at Elfed High School, in Buckley, said they took the decision to close due to an issue with the school's heating system.

A yellow weather warning was in place for ice overnight due to the freezing temperatures.

Mr Stubbs, said: "Unfortunately, we have had to take the decision to close the school this morning due to no heating or hot water.

"When we arrived at school at 6.30am this morning it was clear that the heating had been on as there was some warmth in the building, but the heating wasn't operating.

"The decision was taken to do all that we could to keep the school open, in the hope that there was a quick fix.

"We contacted Flintshire's Property Services to inform them of the issue and they were very quick to support, sending their heating engineers out. We sent an email to all parents, explaining the issue, and told them that we would update them at 10am."

He added: "The feedback from the heating engineers was that it is highly unlikely that they can get the heating system back up and running, so with the temperatures as low as they are outside, the building was quickly cooling down.

"We have now informed all parents of the decision to close and we are making sure that arrangements are in place for all students to go home safely.

"We will now work with the heating engineers to solve the problem, with the hope of opening fully on Monday morning.

"I have been in close contact with the Chief Officer, Education and Youth, who has been able to support."
