A NEW Lidl store set for Deeside will bring with it a host of new jobs to the area.

The new supermarket will replace the old Somerfield/Co-op store, in Connah's Quay, which was torn down last November.

Lidl is now all set to relocate from its current site at Deeside Retail Park to move into the new location, taking its current staff members along with it.

But, it will also create new jobs when it opens, the German company has confirmed.

A spokesperson for Lidl said: "The store will require up to 40 members of staff (25 full time equivalent) in order to operate in the most efficient manner."

They added: "All 15 existing members of staff (at Deeside Retail Park) will transfer to the replacement store on its opening. The new jobs created by the proposal will comprise both full and part-time roles, with part-time hours ranging from nine to 36 hours."

Planning for the new 2,179sq metre store was secured back in 2022.

Flintshire Council confirmed that prior approval for demolition is not required due to the permissions already in place.

The building was once home to a Somerfield supermarket but after that company was taken over by the Co-op it was refurbished and rebranded, reopening in July 2010.

However, it closed down just two years later with the loss of over 30 jobs.

An opening date for the new supermarket will be confirmed in due course, Lidl has said.
