AN Army veteran is in his new Flintshire home, just in time for Christmas, thanks to the support of a charity.

Ian Barber, 59, who served from 1989-2001 in the 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, is sharing his story of how the Royal British Legion have supported him in getting set up in his new home ahead of the festive period.

From his time in service and his personal life, Ian has a range of injuries and illnesses - including having two broken knees, a back injury, suffering from a TIA (a transient ischaemic attack or "mini stroke") and having a kidney removed. Ian's difficulties were exacerbated when his marriage broke down in 2018 and he was left without a place to call home. Ian shares: "I was terrified."

The RBL stepped in and provided him with financial support and with assistance in moving to a flat near Buckley. Now, Ian is thrilled to have moved into his new home in Penyfford that is more appropriate for his mobility needs.

The RBL supported Ian with removal costs, supplying and fitting carpets and blinds and an oven for his kitchen. Ian is really pleased with the move and having his oven ahead of the festive period. He added: "I'm looking forward to cooking my Christmas hams!"

Ian is glowing about his experience with RBL, specifically his case officer Elaine. He said: "Elaine is brilliant. I couldn't ask for a better person to be dealing with. It's like talking to your mum - she's lovely."

This Christmas the RBL is reminding its community there are many ways it can support them, and to reach out if they are struggling.

The Royal British Legion's interim Director of Services, Nina Villa, said: "Christmas can be a time when people's troubles and worries are exacerbated by the financial pressures of the season or feelings of loneliness and isolation. We want the Armed Forces community to know that we are here for them, whether that's to offer financial support, companionship, or a friendly ear.

"The support the Royal British Legion offers, and the camaraderie of the charity's extensive network, means we can make a big difference to our community's wellbeing. We want all those within our community who may be feeling the pressures of the season to know that they can reach out - our lines are open 8am-8pm every day."

• The support the RBL offers, and the camaraderie of the charity's network can make a big difference to the Armed Forces community's wellbeing at this time of year, and Christmas events at RBL care homes and in local Legion branches are ongoing.

Support is available over the festive period through the Royal British Legion's helpline, open 8am-8pm, seven days a week, on 0808 802 8080.
