A SHOPLIFTER who tried to get away with sportswear worth almost £300 was experiencing financial difficulties, a court heard.

Andrew Owen, of Perry Road in Gobowen, appeared at Wrexham Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old admitted two offences of shoplifting, both of which took place in Wrexham City Centre on November 1.

Prosecutor Justin Espie told the court that on the day, Owen went into Sports Direct and took the security tag off a £288 tracksuit before leaving.

But he was challenged by staff and the tracksuit was recovered.

He also entered Savers and took laundry liquid worth £4.99.

Stephen Edwards, defending, told the court: "In the 90s and early 2000s, he came before the court on a regular basis - all down to his heroin addiction.

"He's been greatly assisted by his parents in getting his life back on track."

But his father died three months ago, which "knocked him" and caused a "backwards step" in his progress.

"These offences are basically a result of a lack of funds," Mr Edwards added.

"He gets just over £200 a month [in benefits] and now has no work, which leaves him with very little money."
