• Ysgol Penyffordd
Ahead of creating a newspaper of their own, Year 5 and 6 children at the Flintshire primary welcomed a journalist to the school.
Claire Pierce, community content editor at the Leader, gave a talk on key things to consider when putting a publication together, including punchy headlines, good images and a mix of hard news and features, all held together with the all important editing.
The pupils then asked a series of questions, including how to go about getting a story in a paper and what they would need to do for a career in journalism.
Asked for one of her favourite stories she had written, Claire spoke about an interview with a medium, who believed she could talk to spirits, which sparked much excitement from the young audience.
Claire said: "It was a genuine treat to be able to talk about what I do and share some tips. The children gave me their full attention and made me feel incredibly welcome. I can't wait to see what they put together for their own newspaper.
"And going by the excellent questions and desire to know more, I think we may see a few Ysgol Penyffordd faces at the Leader headquarters in the future."
• Ysgol Penygelli, Coedpoeth
The School Council, Eco Council and Criw Cymraeg from the Wrexham primary, had a visit to the Mayor's Parlour in the Guildhall, Wrexham.
Cllr Andy Williams, the Mayor, showed them around his offices, discussed his work with pupils and asked them about the work they do.
The visit was a great experience for all the children.
• Ysgol Owen Jones, Northop
AN opticians in Flint has donated high-visibility vests to the Flintshire primary school to ensure children in the community stay safe and visible.
Specsavers Flint visited and donated 100 vests to Ysgol Owen Jones ahead of Road Safety Week.
Holly Roberts, store director, handed the vests to the children and provided a talk on the importance of regular eye tests, supporting the school’s healthy living initiative.
Mrs Roberts said: “At Specsavers Flint, we’re very passionate about supporting our community. That’s why we were so keen to donate high-vis vests to our local school to ensure children stay safe this winter.
“Raising awareness of the importance of sight tests is also something close to our hearts, so it was great to see the children so engaged when teaching them about the different parts of the eye and letting them know what happens at a sight test.”
Ysgol Owen Jones headteacher, Gareth Caughter, added: “We are so grateful to Specsavers Flint for their donation and insightful talk, which our pupils found very interesting. As the nights draw in, it’s important to raise awareness around road safety and share crucial messages about visibility with the children. The vests donated by Specsavers will be put to good use on school trips, and act as a reminder to stay safe while crossing the road.”
• Ysgol Rhos Helyg, Rhosesmor
Last week, to celebrate the school's 70th anniversary, the children enjoyed talks from past headteachers Idris Davies and Gwilym Edwards.
They were accompanied by past pupils who told the children about life in school when it first opened. They then had time in class to write about the history of Ysgol Rhos Helyg.
The school held an art competition for pupils on the theme of Our School.
In the afternoon the children had cake in the hall and saw a slide show of old photos.
On Saturday they opened their doors to the wider community and past pupils, with many visitors in attendance, some who travelled from further afield.
There was a display of lots of old photos from over the years, including old registers and trophies.
The PTA provided refreshments, with cakes made by Alison Leonard.
• Ysgol Rhiwabon, Wrexham
Active Wrexham recently visited the school to "train the sport and physical activity coaches of the future”.
It was deemed a "fun and informative day" delivering sports leaders.
The school welcomed Paul McLachlan, from Gareth Morris Construction Ltd, for an informative presentation to Year 9 pupils.
Everyone gained a valuable insight into the career opportunities the construction industry can offer through apprenticeships and beyond.
Thanks to Lesley Lloyd at Careers Wales for facilitating the presentation.
